There were three people involved. Some of them broke into his home office, stole keys, and attempted to take his Ferrari and Range Rover. One car was parked at the end of the driveway, but the other was behind a gate the group couldn’t open.

The homeowner rushed outside and warned the group to stop or he would shoot. One thief shot a gun, and the homeowner fired back seven times from behind a tree.

Two men fled the scene in a getaway car, while the third ran off. Police said they recovered over 30 shell casings from the scene.

The three suspects are still on the run, but the Winnetka police gave out descriptions:

This incident occurred just after noon in broad daylight in a safe area. She called 911 multiple times, and on the sixth attempt, she requested to speak with a supervisor.

“A gentleman got on and said sorry to say we have no units to send you…then there was an awkward pause,” she said. “He also recommended I call my alderman, and I said why- and he said encourage him to hire more police. The dispatcher also asked me if I would consider defending myself …if I had a weapon or considered getting one.”

Police departments are struggling to find new recruits, so don’t expect response times to improve anytime soon. Thankfully, they took off, and there wasn’t a confrontation.

Can you imagine being a mother at home with your kids and having 911 inform you that help is not coming?

She probably would have received a faster response if the home invaders had been inside, but if all police units had been busy with other calls, it would have already been too late.

Part of the news release read, “When the suspect broke a window and attempted to enter the residence, the homeowner fired a single round, stopping the offender’s advance.”

Knightdale Police Chief Lawrence Capps stated, “Our state’s laws dictate when a person may use reasonable force, including deadly force, to protect themselves from presumable death or serious bodily injury.”

“These same laws rightfully provide civil and criminal relief for those who are compelled to use legal force in self-defense situations. We are grateful that the homeowner and his wife survived this ordeal. Furthermore, the suspect’s survival means that he can now be held accountable in a court of law.”

Police arrested Acevedo and charged him with felony breaking and entering with intent to terrorize. He is in the Wake County Detention Center on a $15k bond.

I would have loved to have seen the look on the idiot’s face when he kicked in the door. I’m positive this is not the resident he was expecting.

He doesn’t even have to go to court and is released directly from the hospital with no bail. Granted, he got shot twice, but does anyone honestly think he learned his lesson?

It gets better. The real kicker is he was already out with no bail for trespassing at Soldier Field a few days earlier.

The only good news is the resident wasn’t charged, and the attempted home invasion was not successful.

They found the two men who were shot dead outside the home when the police arrived, while the other two managed to flee the scene. The house’s occupants were unharmed, including an adult woman, a 12-year-old boy, and two 17-year-old boys. According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the district attorney will present the case to a grand jury.

While using a shotgun can be effective in home defense, it’s a tragedy that a young man had to resort to violence to protect his loved ones.
