The Colt M1911, designed by John M. Browning, debuted over a century ago and has since become an icon in the world of handguns. It comes in 45 ACP, also known as .45 Auto, and .45 Automatic, but now they are even offered in other calibers like 9mm.

The military and law enforcement are moving away from the brick that this thing is. They have moved to double stack (9 mm, 40, etc.). I mean, you can get the 1911 in just about every caliber. I’m not trying to stir up anybody’s criticism, but a brick is a brick.

If you’ve ever trained for an extended period with a 1911, the 45 APC is not the most controllable caliber. You might be on target with that first round. Still, if you’re ever put under pressure or have some adrenaline pumping after that kick, the second, third, and fourth will definitely not be on target for the average Joe.

We can also touch on the average Joe with the muffin top, like me, who definitely cannot conceal this. I’m not even going to speak to you about being comfortable.

Let’s Go Over The Top 5 Advantages of The 1911

Proven Reliability

One of the key factors contributing to the enduring popularity of the 1911 is its legendary reliability. The 1911 has consistently demonstrated exceptional performance throughout its long history, even in the harshest conditions.

Timeless Design and Ergonomics

The design of the 1911 remains remarkably relevant even in the face of modern advancements in firearm technology. Its slim profile, natural grip angle, and intuitive controls continue to set a standard for handgun ergonomics.

Caliber Versatility

The 1911’s design allows for chambering in various calibers, from the original .45 ACP to 9mm, .40 S&W, and even 10mm Auto. Some manufacturers, like Stealtharms, even make one that uses a Glock magazine.

Cultural and Historical Significance

The Colt 1911 has played a crucial role in numerous historical conflicts, from World War I to the present day. The handgun was issued to the US Armed Forces from 1911 to 1985. The Barreta M9 replaced it because NATO wanted a more widely used round, and the Barreta was a 9mm.

Despite its age, the 1911 continues to impress with its inherent accuracy. Its fixed barrel design and crisp trigger break allow for precise shot placement.

In a rapidly evolving world of firearms technology, the enduring relevance of the Classic 1911 is a testament to its timeless design, reliability, and cultural significance.

My Personal Opinion On The 1911

Everything I’ve said has been for this: I would never carry this gun for concealed carry, and it’s not going to be by my bedside at night. I’m definitely not going to use it for much of anything else.

We called it the grill gun at Christiansen Arms because it stays in the pelican case. When your friends and family come over, and you’re cooking out, and everybody’s having a great time, that’s what you pull out. You open up that pelican case and say, hey, look at this, and they’re all like the 1911, WOW.

I was digging through my old concealed carry guns, and I pulled out my Frankenstein Glock 26. I’m not a Glock hater, by any means. It just feels like when you hold it in your hands and look at it, they never moved on or were innovative.

It’s funny how time changes everything. Back in the early 90’s, I purchased my first Glock in Hawaii. Remember Die Hard 2. No one had them, and they all said a plastic gun would never be successful.

Like the BlackBerry and the iPhone, Glocks work wonderfully. But they’re all the same. Is that a good thing about Glock?

It never changes, kind of like hamburgers at McDonald’s. They are kind of the same wherever you go. I still have a few Glocks but have moved on to my SIG M17, SIG 365X, SIG P365, and my wife’s 365SAS.

My SIG P365 has a gas pedal and a 12+1 magazine. The Glock 26 is a G4 with a 12+1 magazine, which is nice for a little longer grip.

In my opinion, if you have never tried a gas pedal, the gas pedal is the way to go. If you’re trying to keep a smaller firearm under control, you have a much smoother and more controlled trigger pull. That thing was a game-changer for me. I have one on all my firearms. This is my M-17 with a Surefire x300 weapons-mounted light and gas pedal by Go Gun USA.

Sig M17 with Surefire Light

The newer SIG P365, like the SIG P320, the SIG M-17, and all the P365’s, are completely modular with the new design of their trigger system. Since the trigger is the serialized piece, you can customize the grip slide, etc., to whatever fits your hand, so a smaller firearm like the P365 can fit more comfortably for each shooter. It’s not one and done.

I asked for some thoughts on LinkedIn, and here’s what some people had to say.

Jason Smith, “While I have run several Glock 19/17/22/26, they are the same to me except for size, and the 22 is a different caliber. I carried the 26 for several years until I started carrying the performance center shields and a compact Canik. I’ve had a 365 Sig that I liked a lot, but if I wanted to compare the Glock 26, say, with a far less expensive gun that shot just as good or even better, in my opinion, would be the $220 price point Taurus G2C it has run circles around my G-26. I have two professional training Glock 17’s, which both do the job, but I think there are pistols out there that are far better in price and more pleasing to the eye than the Glock.”

Mike Nelson out of Texas, “I have two Glocks. I also have two Beretta model 92 FS pistols…one blued, one stainless. And let’s not forget the Colt Govt Mark IV .380 and S&W .38 snub nose. But most importantly, I have two M1911A1s from the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). Which do I carry? Who cares. I’ll keep the criminals guessing. Just know that I shoot nice center-mass groups with each.”

Colt M1911A1

Would you use a hammer or a sharp knife to get the job done? Remember to know your laws, get some training, and always be vigilant.

I’m curious to know your opinion?

What can happen immediately after the shots are fired in self-defense? Do you render first aid, and are you prepared?

There are many things to learn from watching this video, but my emphasis is on what happened after the shooting.

I often talk about how to prevent being involved in a confrontation. Someone recently asked me why the person who was shot in another video I discussed didn’t receive medical attention from the responding officers.

What Happened After This Shooting Caught on Body Cam

This is a separate case that recently happened in Chicago. The officer on top of the individual in this video is a Field Training Officer (FTO). A couple of people have said the second officer was fresh out of the academy (I haven’t been able to 100% confirm this, but the pieces fit).

This article is NOT ABOUT TACTICS and what could have been done better. Its focus is after the shots are fired.

In the body cam, the man tells officers to kill him as they wrestle over his gun. The younger officer dropped his firearm during the altercation to help the FTO. After several seconds, two shots were fired during the struggle on the floor. The individual clearly was not going to allow himself to be arrested and ended up getting shot. He even said multiple times, “Shoot me.”

After the shots are fired, it goes from bad to worse. The younger officer, who did not fire his weapon, runs out to the squad car to get a first aid kit, then returns to the house.

It appears the officer had no medical supplies on him. Not even a tourniquet (TQ)

When he looks for a medical kit, it is not readily accessible, and when he opens the trunk, he rummages through things, looking for what he needs.

The gloves to prevent blood contamination are not in the kit. If they are, he is not aware of it. Again, those few seconds could mean the difference between life and death.

You often hear the term “Individual First Aid Kit” (IFAK) when referring to a small medical first aid kit someone would carry.

It was almost a minute before the officer returned and would have been ready to render aid. I don’t think there was any chance of saving the guy, even if they could have immediately treated his wound.

The suspect did not survive, but neither officer was physically injured. Emotional trauma for the officers involved is a different story.

WARNING: This is for training and awareness; some people will find it difficult to watch. Not as much because of the medical aspect, but you can feel the officer’s emotions. It does an excellent job of showing what these guys go through.

How Long Does It Take to Bleed Out From a Gunshot?

A person can bleed to death in as little as 2 minutes if someone doesn’t stop the bleeding. The average time it takes for a person to bleed out following severe physical trauma, such as a gunshot wound, is between three and five minutes. The average response time for emergency personnel is 7 to 10 minutes. In some areas, this wait time can be considerably longer.

An officer from the Allen, Texas, Police Department has an RDR Gear tourniquet holster bracket on his duty holster.

In the image, you can see how easily it is to carry a tourniquet you can get to quickly. This is on the holster of an officer from the Allen, Texas, Police Department. This department responded to the Allen Mall mass shooting in May 2023. In this incident, people who had been shot were receiving critical care, including tourniquets, before emergency medical help had arrived.

A tourniquet can easily be carried even if you do not have room for a full IFAK. Different types are available, including the one shown above that attaches right to your holster, made by RDR Gear. Even if you conceal carry, options are available, like the Flatpack that goes on the Phlster Enigma.

Bleeding out can happen fast, and seconds count. I was at the Texas DPS facility outside Austin a few months ago. I got to talking with a combat medic, who told me of a story where he had to stick his finger in a wound to stop the bleeding. His finger remained there in flight and all the way to the hospital. Fortunately, the person survived, but I could tell it was something that the medic would remember forever.

Should You Provide First Aid to Your Attacker?

That’s a question there is no straightforward answer to. Is the scene safe? Are you trained to provide first aid? Can someone else provide aid? This is a topic of its own. I will emphasize that not all incidents are safe, and treating the injured is not always practical.

Your personal safety comes first.

I’m a strong advocate of being able to provide medical care, and “Stop the Bleed” is available all over the country. The program is available for anyone to attend, even if you are the average person wanting to learn what to do if you are the one who needs help.

PSA Dagger Compact Review

The PSA Dagger Compact is a 9mm semi-auto striker-fired pistol, and it is essentially a Glock Gen 3 clone. It has a polymer frame, a stainless steel slide with DLC finish, and a capacity of 15+1. It retails for $299, which is significantly less than the Glock 19. The Dagger comes with a Magpul PMAG that may cause problems, but these can be fixed by sending the gun back to PSA. The sights are a typical three-dot steel design, and plenty of aftermarket options are available. It’s at a much lower price point and compatible with Glock aftermarket parts, making it a great gun to add to your lineup. Plus, PSA has a top-notch lifetime warranty.

Cerakote

Cerakote is a polymer and ceramic coating that offers exceptional abrasion and wear resistance.

Companies like X-Werks can even help you go all out and fully customize your firearm.

Armornite

Armornite is an internal and external treatment based on nitride that makes the metal tougher and increases corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is rust-resistant but not rust-proof and can be left untreated or polished. The longevity of a gun’s finish depends on how well you take care of it.

What finish you choose will impact how well your gun performs and last over time.

As a firearms instructor, I’m here to share some insights about an essential topic: choosing the perfect gun safe. Trust me, when it comes to protecting your beloved firearms, it’s not a decision to be taken lightly. The safe is not only there to protect your guns from theft or fire but also from unauthorized access. The last thing you want is a child getting access to a firearm.

When choosing a firearm safe, you will need to consider the types available, such as cabinet-style, in-wall or floor, hidden, and lock boxes. Size, weight, and exterior design are additional features to consider, as are the locking mechanism and fire protection.

In some circumstances, you may just want a way to conceal your firearm for easy access.

Size Matters!

When selecting a gun safe, you need to consider its dimensions and weight. After all, you want a safe that accommodates your current collection and allows room for future additions.

Fire Rating

It’s recommended to choose a safe with a UL fire-resistance rating and to bolt it down to prevent theft.

Locking Type

From electronic keypads to biometric scanners and traditional dial locks, we’ll explore the pros and cons of each option.

Oh, and here’s a pro tip: don’t forget to bolt down your gun safe! It’s like giving it an extra layer of security, preventing any potential theft attempts. Trust me, you’ll sleep better at night knowing your firearms are safe and sound.

If you’re ready for even more details and expert advice on choosing the perfect gun safe, I invite you to check out the main article.

When choosing a security camera for your home, there are various options to consider, including wireless, wired, and smart device-compatible cameras, as well as indoor and outdoor cameras.

Camera Features

Some essential features to look for include motion detection, recording time, retention time, notifications, and a power source. Other factors to consider include low-light capabilities, location placement, field of view, and image quality. With so many options available, it’s important to research and compare different cameras to find the one that will work best for your needs.

Camera Placement

Camera placement, lighting conditions, field of view, image quality, resolution, and frames per second are all critical considerations.

What are the highest priority factors in choosing a camera?

When choosing a security camera, you should consider trade-offs between features such as lower image quality, which will provide more storage but sacrifice the details you can see. The placement may come down to whether or not you can run any cables to the location.

Overall, it’s important to find a camera that best suits your needs and provides adequate security for your home.
